Does it mean anything if a guy doesn't message you on facebook?

Ok, so there's this guy I like and a little while ago he showed some interest in me (we held hands on the way back from a trip). I'm not going to be able to see him in person until fall when school starts up again but I have him on facebook. A few days ago I messaged him (and dropped a pretty obvious hint that I like him) and we had a good conversation online for a little while. My question is does it mean anything if a guy never initiates conversation with you online? I don't expect him to profess his undying love for me or anything (lol), just wondering if it means anything if he never drops me a line? Maybe he just wants to get to know me better next year? Thanks.
